5Fascinating anecdotes and historical sketchesApr 02, 2008
By Savvy Veteran "Ed"
This latest in the Armchair series provides intriguing historical anecdotes about and sketches of such figures as Alfred Nobel, Ben Franklin, and Ivan the Terrible. Lots of detail for the informed reader of history, and much fun for, say, a middle-school student being introduced to world history.

4Light fluffy fun overview of HistoryFeb 02, 2009
By R. C Sheehy "deadsox"
Well truth be told there isn't much that a history buff will find new in this book but to the casual reader it's interesting and fun. I would recommend to someone who would like to get the highlights version of history.

5Each of my kids said this is the best history book ever!May 19, 2011
By Sheri Gill "Check out the books I've written!"
We are a homeschooling family and are always looking for books that are educational and interesting. Also, when I was in high school I found history to be so dull. It was lifeless, uninteresting, just the pits. Through our years of homeschooling we have tried several boxed curriculum, some of them very expensive. We have also gotten quite a few books from DK which tend to be more interesting. After all these years though, we have really just depended on DVDs from the library, Amazon and Netflix because they make history come to life. Then, this past summer I found Armchair Reader The Amazing Book Of History....

I have three kids ranging from 10 to 17. All three of them have come to me at different times and said this is the best history book ever. They all enjoy reading it, and bring lots of topics up at the dinner table, which is great for any parent to hear!

The book is thick, 503 pages in all, but each section is short! Lots and lots of topics are covered, from the birth of the radio to the Underground Railroad, from "The Fate of the Passenger Pigeon" and information on Ninjas, to King Tut and biological and chemical warfare.

It is written in a very unique way, which I find hard to explain. It has just enough information on each topic, never enough to get boring, but enough to spark interest. It is written in such an engaging way, I think all ages can read it, enjoy it, learn from it..this includes adults. There are no pictures, it's almost all words on a page except for a few line drawings here and there, no glossy pics..but you will never miss them! Also, there are pages called "Fast Facts" throughout and the facts range from typical... like "The 365 day calendar has its origin in Ancient Egypt," to things like "Wild Bill Hickock was shot dead at a poker game in 1876 while holding aces and eights - a hand now known as the Dead Man's Hand." Who doesn't love to learn things like that??

This is a terrific book. I recommend it not only for homeschoolers, but for anyone who loves history, or is bored by it! You will be entertained, and learn a lot.

5Armchair Reader: The Amazing Book of HistoryOct 15, 2009
By J. P. Conrad
It will take me a while to finish it, but I always keep it handy so when time permits I take the opportunity to read 2 - 10 articles. I get a kick out of sharing some of the facts I've just learned for the first time or being reminded of something I had completely forgotten. I'm very fortunate that I took the time to read the offer in the first place. I'm making every effort to stop the advertising.
