Description:

World War II, the greatest conflict of the 20th century, spawned a fascinating array of personalities and events. World War II Extraordinary Facts and Stories, from the popular Armchair Reader series, relates the battles, bombings, and politics of World War II, and reveals intriguing and often overlooked details and little-known stories of the war. This book includes more than 150 fascinating anecdotes and articles; hundreds of fast facts; and a World War II timeline that traces major events from the early 1930s to 1951.

Here are some topics in the book:

  • Stella Goldschlag, "The Blonde Poison," the fair-haired and attractive Jewish woman whose acts of betrayal condemned as many as 2,300 fellow Jews to Hitler's Nazi concentration camps.
  • Japan's Fu-go project, an attempt to attack the United States with balloon bombs released into the Pacific jet stream. About 300 reached the United States.
  • Nazi Germany's V-2 rockets that inflicted tremendous destruction in England were assembled underground near Nordhausen, Germany, by concentration-camp prisoners. More than 50,000 prisoners were assigned to this project, and only about half survived.
  • The United States's failed attempt to deploy bats armed with firebombs—flying mammals, not Louisville Sluggers—as weapons against Japan.

From President Franklin D. Roosevelt and General George Patton to Nazi leaders Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler, from war strategies and tactics to the weapons of war, World War II Extraordinary Facts and Stories presents an extensive collection of World War II articles and personality profiles.

4Very interesting overview of World War II, well worth your timeDec 30, 2008
By R. C Sheehy "deadsox"
Pardon the cliche, but this is the type of book that once you pick it up you can't put it down. I really enjoyed reading this book and found the information both very interesting and full of facts that are both interesting and yet when it comes to the Third Reich and holocaust disturbing. The book is very easy to read and the facts are well ordered and contain both well known stories as well as lesser known facts. I also liked the "behind the scenes" type of stories used in the book.

I only stop from giving this book a full five stars because there are several typos like the Philippines being given independence in 1947 and not 1946 and a lot of information is repeated in the book. Still I strongly recommend this to you if you're interested in World War II or even if you're interested in learning more about the period.

5Great Find for all Ages...Jan 11, 2008
By M. Olmstead "wwii4kids"
I have 3 sons who are quite interested in World War II, one of whom is truly passionate about it. I'd forgotten most of what I learned about WWII in school until my 11-year-old became such an enthusiast. Recently we launched a website named World War II for Kids , and in the process of doing our research, we discovered discovered this book. It's a biggie (500+ pages), but it's broken into bite-size snippets that often give a different perspective on some topics that might otherwise seem boring to kids. It includes lots of great stories. I've had a hard time prying it from my 11-year-olds hands since it arrived in the mail. I highly recommend this book!

4Great BookDec 27, 2007
By B. Wood "Devil Dog"
I just got this book for Christmas. If you're a WWII fan I highly recommend this book. It is full of really short stories and facts about the war. The stories I've read so far are only a few pages long and are great for bathroom breaks.

4Good but annoyingly repetitiveJun 27, 2011
By Matisyahu Wolfberg "truth seeker"
a lot of interesting stuff I didn't know about WW2, however, a lot of little stuff is repeated, which makes it look like they are trying to fill the book.

4Good Informational BookMay 26, 2011

I bought this to try out in replace of Uncle John's Bathroom books. My husband likes it but says he prefers the format of Uncle John's Bathroom books. I will probably not buy this again
